Norfolk Southern toxic train crash releases dangerous chemicals into the air and streams

‘Bombshell' Memo Raises Major Questions About Ohio Chemical Burn

"The open burning of toxic chemicals has been banned in the United States since 1980 due to risks to human health and the environment... Norfolk Southern intentionally vent and burn five tanker cars full of vinyl chloride, a cancer-causing chemical used to make plastic... That highly controversial move released massive black plumes of noxious smoke." - HuffPost (excerpted)

Put public safety over corporate greed

Toxic train derailment leads to environmental disaster

Blindsided

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) and Norfolk Southern have defended the vinyl chloride burn, citing the risk of tanker cars exploding.

The burn itself was a crude process in which emergency responders blasted holes in the five tanker cars, drained the vinyl chloride into pits in the ground and set it on fire using flares. Drabick, who as incident commander made the final call, told federal investigators at the National Transportation Safety Board that Norfolk Southern and its contractors presented intentional burning as the only viable and safe option due to the risk of an explosion, and gave him just 13 minutes to make the decision — a request that he said left him “blindsided.” - HuffPost

SCOTUS cripples the EPA ability to regulate greenhouse gases increasing the risk of global warming and sea level rise

Elections have consequences

“Hard on the heels of snatching away fundamental liberties, the right-wing activist court just curtailed vital climate action. It’s a bad decision and an unnecessary one, but the EPA can still limit greenhouse gases at the source under Section 111 and more broadly through other Clean Air Act provisions." - Jason Rylander, an attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute in Engadget.
