Firearms anywhere and everywhere

"Seven people died in a school shooting in Nashville. Three of them were nine-year-olds. Three were staffers. One was the shooter. In the aftermath of the shooting, President Joe Biden once again urged Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons, to which today’s Republican lawmakers will never agree because gun ownership has become a key element of social identity for their supporters, who resent the idea that the legal system could regulate their ownership of firearms.

In the wake of the shooting, Representative Andrew Ogles (R-TN), who represents Nashville thanks to redistricting by the Republican legislature that cut up a Democratic district, said he was “utterly heartbroken” by the shooting and offered “thoughts and prayers to the families of those lost.”  In 2021, Ogles, his wife, and two of his three children held guns as they posed for a Christmas card with a caption that read: “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference—they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.” - Letters From An American

Seven shooting victims will not be celebrating Christmas

Ban assault weapons

"GOP Rep. Jim Jordan when he canceled a hearing to de-regulate “pistol straps,” devices that enhance the killing efficiency of pistols... The cowardly Jim Jordan did not want Democrats to use the hearing to highlight that Republicans care more about blood money from lobbyists than they care about the lives of schoolchildren.

We need to be louder, bolder, more demanding, and less apologetic about offending voters who will never be convinced no matter what concessions we make. We need to recognize that Americans who want this madness to stop constitute a strong majority capable of forcing their will on those who protect guns over the lives of schoolchildren.

It is long past time to ban assault weapons. If reaching that goal means we must enlarge the Supreme Court, do it. If it requires amending the Constitution, do it. If it requires demanding that every Democrat running for office sign a pledge to support banning assault rifles, do it. Democrats should no longer retreat from this issue in political fear but should set the terms of the debate—and then have it, once and for all." - Robert Hubbell

Sandy Hook Promise

Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation. By empowering youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children, we can take meaningful actions in schools, homes, and communities to prevent gun violence and stop the tragic loss of life.

TakeAway: Hold Republicans accountable for the deaths of innocent children that could have saved by passing common sense gun safety measures.
