How to stop Google from exploiting your GMAIL to train its AI Engine

Google has integrated Gemini into Gmail as of March 29, 2026. This has shifted it from a "sidebar feature" to a native, "on-by-default" layer of the inbox. While Google officially states they do not use the raw content of your emails to train their global AI models without permission, the reality of how they monetize your data is more complex.

You have been automatically OPTED IN to allow Gmail to access all your private messages & attachments to train AI models. You have to manually turn off Smart Features in the Setting menu in TWO locations. And Gmail has tied basic stuff like spell checking to this "Smart Features" option. So to get basic spell checking you have to opt in to the full AI scanning of your emails.- Dave Jones

Monetizing your private emails

There's no shortage of big tech companies that want to use your data to train their large language models. Meta wanted Facebook users to grant it permission to upload their entire camera roll to its cloud -- perpetually.

Google doing the data harvesting. Gmail now wants to use your emails -- including any attachments you have -- to train its AI models for features like Smart Compose and AI-generated replies.

While Google denies that this is the case, the company has made this feature opt-out by default, rather than opt-in. We know, because we checked multiple accounts, some that haven't been touched in years, and the feature was on. And, we stopped counting at dozens of accounts online saying the same.
