America had 25 billion-dollar disasters in 2023, an all-time high - The Bulletin
Who's going to pay for them? It's not the fossil fuel billionaires who profit from pollution. It's not the MAGA Republicans getting millions in donations from oil, gas and coal lobbyists and cutting funds to FEMA. It is not Clarence Thomas getting secret luxury trips from fossil fuel billionaires.
No! It's you. and other hardworking American tax payers who fund the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Follow the money to see how fossil fuel billionaires have rigged the system so they make money from causing the pollution responsible for climate change. And you get to pay for billion dollar climate disasters with your tax dollars.
Record breaking 25 billion dollar climate disasters in 2023
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has maintained a tally of billion-dollar disasters since 1980, providing some of the most comprehensive data about the economic impact of extreme weather. This year saw 25 such disasters, the most on record, and NOAA’s map shows they left almost no corner of the country untouched. Maui saw the deadliest wildfire in modern US history in August, the South baked beneath a months long drought, and Vermont experienced weeks of summer flooding. These catastrophes caused more than $80 billion in damages combined. - The Bulletin
Republicans oppose climate funding as millions suffer in extreme weather
Nearly 90 million Americans are facing heat alerts this week, yet GOP members are wrangling over spending to reduce emissions... Despite this, the state’s Republican senator Ted Cruz is rallying his fellow GOP members of the Senate commerce committee to circulate a memo attacking climate measures in Biden’s proposed 2024 budget.
It should come as no surprise that Cruz, who has accepted massive donations from oil and gas companies, is defending the fossil fuel industry’s interests, said Allie Rosenbluth, US program co-manager at the environmental advocacy and research non-profit Oil Change International.- The Guardian

"Jerry Jones' natural-gas holdings, including a stake in publicly traded Comstock Resources and his private gas outfit Arkoma, are now worth a combined $4.3 billion, a 115% increase from a year ago. “The greatest wealth is in the gas,” says Jones, talking about his assets’ potential value. - Forbes
"In the 1980s, Justice Thomas appeared in a public service announcement for the agency that featured the Dallas Cowboys, his favorite football team. He struck up a friendship with the team’s owner, Jerry Jones, and began to taste the good life that he still hoped would somehow become his own. As a profile from that period in The Legal Times reported, “He says he plans to be rich, says that means more than just a few hundred thousand dollars a year.” Over the years, he flew in Mr. Jones’s private jet. Mr. Jones gave him a Super Bowl ring. He attended the Cowboys’ training camp, and when the team played in Washington, he sat in the owner’s box. Mr. Jones later became a member of the Horatio Alger Association." - NY Times
