Clark Kent is a mild mannered reporter until there's a crisis. Then he becomes SUPERMAN!
It's the same in real life. Local journalists are the real heroes of Democracy. They report local news so readers know about the issues that matter. Real news. Not opinions designed to get people riled up so they can be served more ads. That's what corporate, billionaire owned outlets like FOX which spread disinformation and incite hatred. Think of them as kryptonite, fatal to democracy.
The Media And Democracy Project (MAD) knows this well. They are a small all-volunteer nonprofit that believes "A well-informed citizenry is the foundation of a democratic society. News and media affect our opinions, voting decisions, degree of civic engagement, and ultimately shape the health of our government and society. Deregulation and technological upheavals have left the crucial work of informing Americans in the hands of corporations with profit directives and political agendas. They often seek to entertain and distract, while failing to provide the accurate and relevant information Americans need to understand the world around us."

Local journalism pays you back
Investing a few dollars a week in local journalism can ultimately save you money while keeping you and your neighbors healthier and safer, because local journalism is invested in you. If you care about your community, then you care about local journalism.
Exposes corruption, fraud, and immorality. "Journalism is what somebody doesn’t want you to know” is a saying about the important watchdog feature of local reporting. Newsrooms are the natural place for whistleblowers to go with information about the unethical practices of corporations and government officials in your town, county, and state.
Shines a light on injustice. The only way we can be aware of injustice in our legal system is for local journalists to be in our courtrooms, prisons, and jails. “The way to right wrongs is to shine the light of truth upon them.” - Ida B. Wells
Holds power accountable. “Local reporters play the vitally important role of ‘bearing witness’ and it is socially beneficial to have them posted in all neighbor-hoods. Just having reporters on the scene can change the way that authorities operate, making them more accountable.” - Victor Pickard, Democracy Without Journalism?
Fox News is a cancer on democracy - Veterans Today
"The Media and Democracy Project filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a Petition to Deny the broadcast license renewal application for Fox Corp-owned television station FOX 29 Philadelphia (WTXF-TV). The lies about the 2020 election that aired on Fox News, authorized at the highest levels of FOX’s corporate structure to retain FOX’s conservative viewer base and reverse failing ratings, represent a severe breach of the FCC policy on licensee character qualifications, MAD reaffirmed today in a legal response to their effort to call for an evidentiary hearing into the matter.
The filings include MAD’s formal reply to Fox Television Stations (FTS) opposition submitted earlier this month. MAD is joined by a growing bipartisan coalition filing informal objections calling for an FCC hearing to fully consider the fitness of FOX Corporation (FOX) and the Murdochs to continue as licensees of the public airwaves. Informal objections were filed by former PBS President and FCC Commissioner Ervin S. Duggan, former Weekly Standard Editor William Kristol, and founding President of Fox Broadcasting Company Jamie Kellner." - Media And Democracy
