The Anti-Abortion Movement’s Language War
"Americans oppose the anti-abortion agenda so much that Republicans are too afraid to call their bans 'bans' anymore.
Look at what’s happening in Virginia, where Glen Youngkin and other Republicans are supporting a 15-week abortion ban, but putting out ads saying that their ban is not a ban.
A Republican claiming they don’t support a national ban means nothing. Candidates need to be asked if they support federal legislation of any kind on abortion. They need to be asked what they mean by ‘ban’. And for the love of all that’s good in this world: Stop taking their fucking word for it!
Even when Republicans are being explicit, they still won’t use the word ‘ban’. Last week, Sen. Lindsey Graham announced that he’d “introduce legislation soon, creating a national minimum standard of 15 weeks.” And when Rep. Elise Stefanik held a press conference to announce that House Republicans would be pushing a 15-week ban, she also didn’t use the word—instead, she said that lawmakers have a role at the federal level regarding “building consensus” on abortion." - Jessica Valenti

How this app and podcast were created with free apps
I first collected 22 of the sneakiest Republican Abortion Ban tricks in a Google Sheet that you can see here in English and then translated them into Spanish here with Google Translate.
This information was converted into an app using the Glide App software. An app lets you combine information from many sources and put them into an easy to use form. I then converted the Republican Abortion Ban Playbook into English and Spanish podcasts with AI. These podcasts were uploaded to SoundCloud so you can stream them in English or Spanish.
Doublespeak
“Doublespeak is language that pretends to communicate but really doesn’t. It is language that makes the bad seem good, the negative appear positive, the unpleasant appear attractive or at least tolerable. Doublespeak is language that avoids or shifts responsibility, language that is at variance with its real meaning. It is language that conceals or prevents thought; rather than extending thought, doublespeak limits it
The power of doublespeak is that it allows the speaker to disavow or deny that a concept has negative traits or connotations. While it may not involve blatant lies, doublespeak may be deceptive if the listener is not fully aware of what meanings or connotations it is masking. Most problematically, after hearing the term repeated and re-used over time, the listener may become inured to these other connotations. - Open Speak
Republicans claiming to be against bans while pushing for an abortion limit is an example of doublespeak. An abortion ban is a ban no matter how you disguise it.
TakeAway: Don't fall for Republican doublespeak. Vote for Democrats to protect women's rights to reproductive healthcare in Viriginia and beyond.
