Above the Law? The Supreme Court's Need for a Code of Ethics

Justices aren't above the law. They need a code of conduct to restore American trust in their ethics.

"Republicans have zero appetite for instituting a code of ethics at the Supreme Court. Conservative justices hold six seats on the court, and we know that at least two of them are severely ethically compromised. Therefore, the last thing the GOP wants is accountability... Republicans voted in favor of the creation of a code of ethics for the Supreme Court when the Senate Judiciary Committee took up that measure." - Who What Why

What is in the Code of Ethics? Why is it needed? What is 'personal hospitality'? Why is it not disclosed? If You Want Supreme Court Accountability, Don’t Look to the GOP - Who What Why

"Does it matter if they misled Congress during their confirmation hearings? No. Can they legislate from the bench with no concern for precedent? Absolutely. Can they use their majority to turn back the clock and take the US back to a time much more to their liking where people other than wealthy whites knew their place? You betcha...It sure is curious that the party that preaches personal responsibility seems to have a real problem with transparency and accountability for those with money and power." - Who What Why

Leonard Leo, stacking the Supreme Court with right wing partisans

"Leonard Leo, a longtime executive of the Federalist Society, the influential nonprofit organization for conservative and libertarian lawyers, is well-known for his efforts to push the judiciary to the right. Using a network of closely related nonprofits over which he holds sway, Leo has led advocacy campaigns to help confirm every conservative Supreme Court justice over the past two decades. He advised Trump on his selection of three justices."

Payments to Ginni Thomas (Wife of Clarence Thomas)

Leo steered tens of thousands of dollars in consulting payments to Thomas’s wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, in 2012, The Post reported recently. He also arranged a fishing trip to Alaska for Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. in 2008, a vacation that included a free ride on the private jet of a billionaire businessman who later had interests before the court, ProPublica reported. Those and other revelations about wealthy conservative donors gaining access to justices outside the public eye have brought scrutiny to the court in recent months." - Washington Post
