Dreamers are Americans.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program allows young people to live and work in the only country they’ve called home. Since 2012, DACA has provided more than 800,000 Dreamers the ability to work lawfully, pursue an education, pay taxes nd contribute their immense skills and talents to better America.
MAGA Republicans and a GOP packed Supreme Court threaten to end the DACA program. Check this map to see how much harm ending DACA would cause.
What is the DACA Act?
"The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was announced on June 15, 2012 by President Obama to allow young people to live and work in the only country they’ve called home. Since then, DACA has provided more than 800,000 Dreamers the ability to work lawfully, pursue an education, and contribute their immense skills and talents to better our communities. Dreamers are Americans. Many have spent the majority of their lives in the United States. They are our doctors, our teachers, and our small business owners. Dreamers strengthen our economy, enrich our workplaces, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, many served their communities on the frontlines.
The bill has been championed by bipartisan coalitions of lawmakers, business and educational leaders and organizations, and the overwhelming majority of the American public. But at each opportunity, Congress has failed to act." - President Biden
Impeached Texas Republican Attorney General Paxton's bid to end DACA
"In his bid to end DACA protections for young immigrants, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton went 350 miles out of his way to file suit in Brownsville’s federal courthouse. The effort paid off when he got the judge he wanted. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen, nominated by George W. Bush, has lambasted the Obama administration’s immigration practices in prior cases and gave Paxton a victory in a similar lawsuit in 2015.
Critics also accused Paxton of forum shopping, the practice of filing lawsuits in a specific court in hopes of getting a sympathetic judge — in this case, Hanen. “The whole idea is that we’re picking judges to call things as they see it, fairly and accurately, according to the rule of law. And if you know your judge on the way in and you think that judge is going to give you a nationwide injunction, then I think it’s contrary to our notion of equal justice under the law and that justice is blind,” Nelson said.
“There are folks who have very little doubt about which way Judge Hanen is likely to rule,” said Stephen Vladeck, a University of Texas law professor who focuses on constitutional law and federal jurisdiction. “The concern is that you are picking judges who are outside the mainstream, that you’re … forum shopping basically as a way of getting as unrepresentative a judge as you can get within the federal system.” Such concerns become magnified, Vladeck said, when the goal is a nationwide injunction barring the government from enforcing a specific policy. - Nelson For Texas
GOP-packed courts push racist immigration policies
"Supreme Justices Silently Back Anti-Immigrant Extremist Judge by affirming the legally flawed and deeply politicized lower-court decisions blocking DACA. The lives of millions of U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens at stake in this litigation. Seldom have so many hopes been crushed by so few words."- Newsweek
It's a reminder of how important voting is. Your votes elect the politicians who appoint judges and the Attorney Generals who enforce them. They create the laws that we live by. They decide who can be part of the AMERICAN DREAM.
