What's behind the surge in gun violence?
University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, at Club Q in Colorado Springs, CO, and at a Walmart store in Chesapeake, VA. Three horrific acts of gun violence this week stress the urgent need for gun safety reforms.
Republicans claim to be for law and order, but block gun safety reforms while stoking hate. The GOP has blood on their hands while offering 'Thoughts and Prayers' to victims of gun violence.
Earlier this year, President Biden signed the most significant gun safety law in nearly three decades, in addition to taking other historic actions. But we must do more. We need to enact an assault weapons ban to get weapons of war off America’s streets. - WhiteHouse
Thoughts and prayers with bloody hands
After Two Mass Shootings, Glenn Youngkin Sure Doesn’t Seem to Want to Say the Word ‘Gun’. He’s said a lot things in response to Virginia’s recent mass shootings. The word “gun” isn’t one them. You won’t hear the word gun from Youngkin. Youngkin has never been shy about his pro-Second Amendment views. A self-described lifelong member of the NRA, Youngkin has been virtually silent on gun control. When CBS Mornings asked him about red flag laws and background checks in June, Youngkin claimed that he wasn’t familiar with either policy to officially weigh in. - Mother Jones
Republicans follow Putin's playbook: Target LGBTQ rights first. Before Florida's "don't say gay" law, Putin used "groomer" accusations to gut LGBTQ rights in Russia. Florida in the year 2022 is where Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law that threatens financial ruin for any speech that could be construed as "instructing" kids about LGBTQ identities. But nine years ago, Putin signed a federal "don't say gay" law. The only difference is Putin could apply it to the whole nation, whereas DeSantis can only exert power on public schools in his state. - Salon
Too many families across America are bearing the awful burden of gun violence. Earlier this year, President Biden signed the most significant gun safety law in nearly three decades, in addition to taking other historic actions. But we must do more. We need to enact an assault weapons ban to get weapons of war off America’s streets. House Democrats acted, and the Senate should follow. - WhiteHouse

It’s Thanksgiving, and many of us are gathering with friends and family. Given the horrific news of our having passed 600 mass shootings in America this week, the dinner topic in many homes will inevitably turn to the political debate around guns. That discussion about guns in America generally falls into two polar opposite positions: don’t regulate guns at all, or ban large parts of the spectrum of guns and heavily regulate ownership of the rest.
But there’s a third position, entirely outside of that spectrum, which every actual “free market“ conservative in America could embrace, and liberals could be down with as well. That’s to treat guns the same way we treat cars. Register cars so there’s a provable chain of ownership; require a license to drive that can only be obtained by proving proficiency as a driver and an understanding of the rules of the road; and liability insurance so if someone was injured or killed they or their family wouldn’t be financially wiped out. - Thom Hartmann
