Follow the gun lobby money blocking gun safety measures

A 15-year-old fatally shot five people and wounded others in Raleigh, N.C. - WaPo. Vote to end gun violence.

The Raleigh shooting was the latest in a violent week across the country. Five people were killed in a shooting at a home in Inman, South Carolina. Two police officers were fatally shot in Connecticut. Police officers have been shot this week in Greenville, Mississippi; Decatur, Illinois; Philadelphia, Las Vegas and central Florida. - Guardian

There have been 75 gun shooting incidents in North Carolina in 2022 already. Republicans block common sense gun safety legislation while getting millions in donations from the gun lobby. Follow the money and politicians blocking gun safety measures. North Carolina voters choose between Cheri Beasley (D) who supports gun safety measures and Ted Budd (R) a gun store owner who opposes gun safety bills. Vote to end gun violence.

'Enough': Biden renews push for assault weapons ban after Raleigh mass shooting

President Biden condemned Thursday’s deadly mass shooting in Raleigh, N.C., and renewed his call for an assault weapons ban. “Jill and I are grieving with the families in Raleigh, North Carolina, whose loved ones were killed and wounded in yet another mass shooting in America,” Biden said in a statement released Friday by the White House. “We are thinking of yet another community shaken and shattered as they mourn the loss of friends and neighbors, including an off-duty police officer.”

Meet an anti-gun safety Senate candidate: Ted Budd

Ted Budd, a Republican congressman and US Senate hopeful owns ProShots, a gun store and shooting range worth millions of dollars worth between $1 million and $5 million. - Business Insider

North Carolina Republican Rep. Ted Budd owns a gun store and does not like anyone talking about firearms laws after mass shootings. For North Carolina Republican Senate nominee Rep. Ted Budd, opposing new gun safety laws isn't just a political opinion: It's also an effort to stop any additional regulations that would affect his own gun shop and shooting range. Budd, whose ProShots gun facility was worth more than $1,000,000 as of his most recent financial disclosure statement, ran for the House seat in North Carolina's 13th Congressional District in 2016 as a staunch opponent of gun laws. - American Independent

The National Rifle Association also supports the congressman — the NRA's political action committee donated $3,000 to Budd when he first ran for office in 2016, $4,500 for his 2018 campaign, and $2,000 for his 2020 campaign, according to nonpartisan research group OpenSecrets.

Budd also spoke out against Democratic legislators' attempts in March to expand background checks for gun sales. "As a federally-licensed gun store owner, I have a unique perspective on our Second Amendment rights, and I know how background checks actually work," he said in opposition. "We cannot sacrifice our rights by passing laws that will make our families less safe, and that criminals will ignore. We must always protect and preserve our God-given Second Amendment rights."

Cheri Beasley

Cheri Beasley (D) is a mom, former public defender, judge, and the first Black woman to serve as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. She’s spent her life fighting to uphold the law and keep communities safe – and as U.S. Senator, she’ll fight to lower costs, create good-paying jobs and expand access to affordable, quality health care in every part of North Carolina.

Cheri believes that everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes, communities, houses of worship, schools, and workplaces. But in too many communities across North Carolina and our country, bonds of trust between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to serve are broken. As a public defender, as a judge and then as Chief Justice, Cheri has worked to protect the safety of North Carolina’s families and make the system more fair, equitable and transparent.

Cheri supports the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, and reforms including increasing investments in public safety, community policing, racial bias, de-escalation, and crisis intervention training for law enforcement. She also supports investing in resources for alternative first responders like mental health professionals and substance abuse counselors.

Newtown Action Alliance

There is a dangerous force that threatens our freedom and daily lives more than any threat abroad: gun violence. A force that turns American schools, shopping malls, movie theaters, concerts, houses of worship and so many other public places into war zones themselves. The result: To date, more Americans have died from gun violence than in military combat.

We must stop standing idly by while more and more Americans are taken from their families because of gun violence. The time to act is now. That’s why we want to eliminate gun violence through both legislative and cultural change. Our first step to reaching that goal: obtaining a bill that requires universal background checks for every firearm sale. - Newtown Action Alliance

Gun Violence Archive

The Gun Violence Archive (GVA) is a non profit online archive of gun violence incidents collected from over 7,500  law enforcement, media, government and commercial sources daily in an effort to provide near-real time data about the results of gun violence. GVA is an independent data collection and research group with no affiliation with any advocacy organization. www.facebook.com/gunviolencearchive and on Twitter @gundeaths. GVA is not, by design an advocacy group. The mission of GVA is to document incidents of gun violence and gun crime nationally to provide independent, verified data to those who need to use it in their research, advocacy or writing.
