McDonald's worker shot

“The 23-year-old victim was working at the fast-food joint around 7 p.m. Monday when Morgan’s mother began hassling him over her fries, a police source said. The mom complained that her fries were cold,’’ the police source said. “The mom was on FaceTime with her son, and he heard the dispute between her and the clerk. The son and the clerk got into a dispute inside, and it went outside.” That’s when Morgan allegedly whipped out a gun and blasted the worker in the neck, cops said.

The man who allegedly shot a Brooklyn McDonald’s worker — leaving him clinging to life — during a heated spat over cold fries has been charged with attempted murder, cops said Wednesday.  Michael Morgan, 20, was taken into custody shortly after the Monday night shooting outside the eatery at 1531 Fulton St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant — and was charged late Tuesday with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon, authorities said. - NY Post

McDonald's dodges responsibility

McDonald’s is locked in a labor dispute over whether the fast-food chain is considered a “joint employer,” and is therefore partly liable for labor violations committed by individual franchises. The company argues that it is not a joint employer, so it cannot be held legally accountable for sexual harassment and other illegal workplace behavior at any of its independently owned restaurants. Workers disagree. They say the company has too much control over franchise restaurants and workers to make that claim. That’s also why McDonald’s won’t get involved in setting hourly pay rates for restaurant workers, and won’t bargain with them through a labor union. - VOX

Organizing McDonalds workers

Fight for $15 advocates for the minimum wage to be raised to USD$15 per hour. The federal minimum wage was last set at $7.25 per hour in 2009. The movement has involved strikes by child care, home healthcare, airport, gas station, convenience store, and fast food workers for increased wages and the right to form a labor union.

Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) is a labor union innovation center dedicated to improving the lives of working people, partnering with its affiliates to develop effective strategies to support workers organizing for better lives for themselves and their families.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a union of about 2 million diverse members in healthcare, the public sector and property services who believe in and fight for our Vision for a Just Society: where all workers are valued and all people respected—no matter where we come from or what color we are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come.

TakeAway: Organize for economic justice when workers are exploited and forced to work in hazardous conditions.
