Convert outrage into votes and volunteers with chatbots

Chatbots join the fight for women's rights

Convert outrage into votes and volunteers.

Who are the Pro Choice candidates running for office? How to explain what the overturn of Roe v Wade in order to inspire others to vote? Recruit volunteers?

Organize faster with chatbots to engage supporters, get them the information they need and train them to also mobilize their friends. Chatbots are easy to set up and edit than a website and ideal for people on phones. You engage with a chatbot, for instance every time you use Uber or Lyft. Chatbots work just as well in the fight to mobilize voters for women's rights. Why should organizers use chatbots?

  • They can be set up in minutes
  • Work on their own around the clock
  • Handle any number of inquiries
  • Have a personalized dialog with callers
  • Provide information, conduct surveys and build lists

Groups working on women's rights can apply for a free chatbot here. These Pro Choice chatbots showcase what's possible:

  • How to direct the outrage through calls and texts with just one click using GIFs from IntoAction
  • Find out about candidates endorsed by Vote ProChoice and share with others offline
  • How to explain and engage others on this issue with tips from #SOMEONEYOULOVE

Have supporters call and text

This Action Button generates a call to Ron Johnson's office to protest his anti-abortion policies. The button can be shared as a link https://actionbutton.live/shame/action or as a QR CODE. When activated it launches the call automatically. Combines the QR Code with a GIF to create a simple call to action that can be shared on social media.

Have supporters make a phone call

Add a QR Code to a GIF to make it easier for supporters to take action with an Action Button

Share info on Pro Choice candidates. Conduct surveys. Build contact lists.

This Action Button also has a QR Code and uses a chatbot to do several things:

  • Collects the caller's phone number, name, zip code and how they'd like to volunteer. The questions they chatbot asks can be easily changed.
  • Provides details on the candidates endorsed by Vote ProChoice in both an online version and a downloadable document.
A social media toolkit and video from #SOMEONEYOULOVE on how to get others engaged in the fight for women's rights
  • How to frame discussions about Abortion after Roe v Wade being overturned by John Neffinger

Why not just provide this information through a website?

  • The information being shared can change quickly. The information that a chatbot provides comes from a database where new resources can be added in minutes. This could be an online link or a PDF which can be downloaded.
  • You have no idea who requested the information when it is on a website. A chatbot lets you collect information from the people interested.
  • Conduct surveys and find out how people want to get involved. These questions can be changed at any time and customized for different areas and affinity groups.

How does someone on a phone take the call to action? The QR Code works well for people who see your message on a laptop or flyer and scan the code with their phone. For people on phones, include a link which then launches the texting app on their phone to begin the dialog with the chatbot.

Pro Choice chatbot

This Pro Choice chatbot responds when you text 'roe' to 202-858-0303 or by scanning the QR Code. It can also be added to a social media post with this link https://actionbutton.live/roe/action#

It asks for your name, zip code and how you'd like to get involved. This information is saved into a database with the user's permission who is told how they can opt out from further communications if they so choose. It then provides a host of information which can be accessed straight from their phones with a few clicks.

Groups with several chapters can share one chatbot as all the responses are saved and can be shared based on the person's zip code and how they would like to be involved.

Share information and build contact lists of Americans upset with Roe v Wade being overturned with chatbots

The Pro Choice bot collects information and saves it into a database. It also provides the information requested.

#VOTEPROCHOICE

"These #VOTEPROCHOICE endorsed candidates -- running for office at every level -- champion a range of social, political, and economic issues that support the right to choose how and when to raise a thriving family in a safe, healthy, and sustainable community. In 2022, we’re focused on local and state-level candidates. Every elected office has a role to play in protecting and expanding reproductive freedom, whether they’re promoting science-based sex education in schools, decriminalizing abortion services, or implementing zoning laws that impact healthcare clinics." - Vote ProChoice

ASO Communications

Don’t Take The Temperature, Change It. Conventional wisdom says to meet people where they are. But, on most issues, where they are is unacceptable. Applying tools from cognition and linguistics, ASO Communications uncovers where people are capable of going and how to use our words, images and stories to move them.

The Republican packed Supreme Court "stripped our freedom to decide for ourselves whether and when to have children. What happens next is in our hands: We must seize the storyline and make it absolutely clear that the majority of Americans support safe, legal and accessible abortion care and we will fight today and vote come November with this top of mind. Now is the moment to grow our base and turn up our volume on this issue to demonstrate to justices and lawmakers what exactly voters demand and to amass the collective will needed to protect our freedoms."

Here are just a few of their GIFs.

John Neffinger / Franklin Forum PAC

John explains in his memo how to frame the issue:

  1. Use the word freedom, then balance it with decision, personal, family and respect.
  2. Be clear it’s Republicans’ fault that we now have to talk about this.
  3. Explain that taking away our freedom to make our own decisions is a top GOP priority.
  4. Be serious and sober. Ground any anger in stories of regular people’s pain.
  5. Avoid jargon and euphemisms. Talk like the people you’re talking with do.
  6. Do not try to justify abortion in general by calling it healthcare. That will backfire.
  7. On later abortions, explain we do not support it without extraordinary reason, but we also do not support prosecutors criminally investigating miscarriages and medical decisions.
  8. On Hyde, respect people who don’t want to fund abortion, but point out we all know that forcing a woman who can’t even afford an abortion to have a child is a bad idea.
  9. Explain that Roe was right because our right to privacy is part of our core right to liberty.

Remember at election time... Republican Party supports forcing victims of rape and incest including under the age of 18 to carry pregnancy to term and now their wish is enforceable law compliments of the US Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade.

We must seize the storyline and make it absolutely clear that the majority of Americans support safe, legal and accessible abortion care and we will fight today and vote come November with this top of mind. Now is the moment to grow our base and turn up our volume on this issue to demonstrate to justices and lawmakers what exactly voters demand and to amass the collective will needed to protect our freedoms.

Communicate better: Go Straight to the Core Values.

Roe in one sentence: "This is about our freedom to decide whether, when, and with whom to have a family."

  • Focus on the core value, freedom, and link it to a second value, family.
  • Distinguish us, including the two-thirds on Roe and the 92 percent on rape and incest, from them.
  • They believe politicians have the right to make our most personal decisions, based on their faith and values.
  • We believe in the freedom to make our own decisions, based on our faith and values.

We need to close the chasm between what we mean by our words and what voters hear. Avoid activist-speak. Our goal is to help people picture what this will mean for their lives and the lives of the people they love. Avoid abstract terms. They pull people away from personal experience and from the emotions that lead them to care and to vote. A three-pronged litmus test to determine whether your message is likely to be effective: 1) Do ordinary people talk this way? Its meaning should be readily apparent to anyone who hears it, the moment they hear it, because it uses words they understand and would use. 2) Does it convey from the first sentence the values we and they share? 3) Does it convey that we understand and care about people like them? It should immediately make them see the implications for their lives." - Drew Westen / Westen Strategies

TakeAway: Organize to fight for our freedom to choose with smart apps and communication strategies.

It is a tragic day today for #humanrights, #womenrights, #lgbtqrights, and so much more. The six #supremecourt judges Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett have a lot in common with the #taliban. They have let their political views take precedent over #privacy and the right of #women to choose their destiny. We are going backward and the arc of #justice has been broken. For the first time in my life, I am truly scared as a woman to be living in the #usa. Do you think the women in Afghanistan in 1972 could imagine their country today? We need to see what is happening with clear eyes and act.
