How billionaires pack the courts to get what they want

How do billionaires get the laws they want while courts deny the rest of us our basic rights?

Follow the money to see how the Supreme Court got stacked with ultra-conservative justices ready to overturn Roe v Wade.

Where does the dark money to push the nominations of ultra-conservative justices like Kavanaugh or block others of moderate justices like Merrick Garland come from? Who funds the talking heads to lobby for a justice? What role do so-called nonprofit groups play in court stacking? How well are political operatives compensated? What do billionaires get in return?

Pay attention: See how dark money has corrupted our politics and politicized courts. Elections have consequences. They determine the courts that decide what rights women have over their bodies? Who can vote? Who gets healthcare. How much can billionaires spend on politics?

Creating a Power Map

This map was designed with the free Kumu app using publicly available data from several sources. It includes links to nonprofit filings, videos and images. A relationship map helps visualize the relationships, motivations and money changing hand between different people. A lot of money flow is hard to trace because there is no reporting, but a map provides a general sense of what's going on.

Roe v Wade

"Today, clips of nomination hearings circulated in which Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, Clarence Thomas, and even Samuel Alito–—the presumed majority in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade—assured the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that they considered Roe v. Wade and the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision upholding Roe settled law and had no agenda to challenge them.

Those statements were made under oath by those seeking confirmation to our highest judicial body, and they now appear to have been misleading, at best. In addition, the decision itself is full of right-wing talking points and such poor history that historians have spent the day explaining the actual history of abortion in the United States. This sloppiness suggests that the decision—should it be handed down in its current state—is politically motivated. And in a Pew poll conducted in February, 84% of Americans said they believed that justices should not bring their political views into their decision making." - Letters From An American

TakeAway: Sunlight is the best disinfectant. People should know how billionaires use their wealth to get the laws they want and deny other Americans their rights.
