Republicans vote against women's rights.

Senate Republicans and Joe Manchin blocked  a bill aimed at preserving access to abortion if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade.

"The Women's Health Protection Act, aimed to "protect a person's ability to determine whether to continue or end a pregnancy, and to protect a health care provider's ability to provide abortion services." Republican-led states in the mean time have advanced bills across the nation that make it harder for women to access abortions and threaten health-care providers who perform the procedure." - CNN

There's a lot of information involved. What are the abortion laws and restrictions by state? Who are the Senators that voted to deny women their rights? How to vote for leaders who respects women's rights? This infographic packs data from the Guttmacher Institute so it's easy to understand and share using ArcGIS software.

Women's Health Protection Act

"THE RIGHT TO ABORTION IS NOT REAL IF ONLY CERTAIN PEOPLE CAN ACCESS IT. Equal access to abortion care—everywhere—is essential for social and economic equality, reproductive autonomy, and the right to determine our own lives. But anti-abortion state lawmakers have passed hundreds of restrictive laws making abortion care extremely difficult to access for many people—despite constitutional protections.

Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA) addresses the current attacks on abortion rights across the U.S. WHPA protects the right to access abortion free from medically unnecessary restrictions and bans on abortion—including mandatory waiting periods, biased counseling, two-trip requirements, and mandatory ultrasounds. WHPA would create a statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care, and a corresponding right for their patients to receive that care, free from medically unnecessary restrictions that single out abortion and impede access." - Act For Women

Guttmacher Institute

The Guttmacher Institute is a leading research and policy organization committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) worldwide. It envisions a future in which all people can realize their rights and access the resources they need to achieve sexual and reproductive health. This vision is aligned with a progressive and evidence-based definition of SRHR, grounded in human rights, which holds that sexual and reproductive health is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity but a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in all aspects of sexuality and reproduction.

Designing a GIF

The GIF of some of the senators (up for re-election) was created with iMovie. Photos of the senators were uploaded to iMovie and titles added. This was then recorded as a GIF and compressed so it loaded quickly into the infographic. Special thanks to Sam Matenaer in helping design the infographic.
