Republican hypocrisy on banning abortions but not assault weapons

Republicans preach sanctity of life for the unborn while ignoring the deaths caused by assault weapons.

"Republicans talk about the sanctity of life, the very moment that moms and dads in Michigan were being told their kids weren't coming home because they were shot at school from gun violence due to Republicans fealty to the gun lobby," said Senator Chris Murphy. - The Hill

This StoryMap includes:

  • Details of 651 mass shootings so far in 2021
  • Donations from the National Rifle Association (NRA) to Republicans
  • Republican 'Thoughts & Prayers' to the victims' families

Republican hypocrisy

"Murphy condemned anti-abortion Republicans following speeches against abortions before the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a case that could potentially overturn Roe v. Wade. Murphy accused them of hypocrisy in light of the fatal school shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan. "This concern for 'life' apparently doesn't extend to the kids who were shot today in a school in Michigan," wrote Murphy. - The Hill

Republicans block background checks. "An amendment to require background checks for commercial gun sales was shot down in a 54-46 vote". Most Republicans voted against it. - Mother Jones

"Senate Republicans rejected a bill that aims to stop suspected terrorists from legally buying guns. The measure would have denied people on the terrorist watch list the ability to buy guns." - MSNBC

Republican AGs fight restrictions on high capacity gun magazines. "A coalition of 22 states led by Republican attorneys general has called on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to rule against California’s attempt to ban gun magazines that hold more than 10 bullets." - Epoch Times

Gun Violence Archive

The Gun Violence Archive (GVA) is an online archive of gun violence incidents collected from over 7,500  law enforcement, media, government and commercial sources daily in an effort to provide near-real time data about the results of gun violence. The GVA is a not for profit corporation that provides free online public access to accurate information about gun-related violence in the United States. It collects and checks for accuracy, comprehensive information about gun-related violence in the U.S. and then post and disseminate it online. It informs those engaged in discussions and activities concerning gun violence, including analysis of proposed regulations or legislation relating to gun safety usage.
