Republicans drag America into the Dark Ages on Women's Reproductive Health

DemLabs blog

Republicans deny women reproductive health putting America behind even Iran and China.

How have other countries moved ahead on women's healthcare while America moves backwards? How does the U.S. compare to 190 countries? How can you be heard against billionaires funding groups that deny women their rights and Republicans stacking courts with judges who rule for them?

Republicans drag America into the Dark Ages for Women's Reproductive Health

World Health Organization: America lagging

This StoryMap uses data from The World Health Organization’s Global Abortion Policies Database. It  is “designed to strengthen global efforts to eliminate unsafe abortion by producing an interactive open-access database and repository of current abortion laws, policies, and national standards and guidelines.” The project uses an extensive questionnaire to categorize dozens of regulatory factors for each country; the findings can be queried online, or downloaded as a spreadsheet.

Republicans deny women their rights

"Abortion was legalized in 1973 But over the last few decades, access to the procedure has increasingly declined in more than a dozen states around the country that have since passed laws making it more difficult for people to get an abortion. The most restrictive law to date is in Texas, a state with nearly 30 million people. The new law that came into effect in September outlaws most abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is usually around six weeks into a pregnancy. There are exceptions for medical emergencies, though those are not clearly defined in the law, and no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest." - Washington Post

Republicans put women's lives at risk

"The Texas legislature and Texas Governor Greg Abbot have truly created a nightmare situation for both the state’s women and the state’s doctors.

“Should I have to wait to perform an abortion until the pregnancy is actually in the process of killing her? Life threatening is not easily defined – it’s not, you’re fine one minute, and then your life is in danger.,” she points out. “It’s a gradual grey process… it’s almost impossible if you’re trying to go by the letter of this law. It’s really a no-win situation for people trying to do their best to care for patients.” Dr Jones wants American women to know, “Anytime you interfere with a physician’s ability to make decisions purely based on medical indication, you put patients at risk.”

A doctor could save a woman’s life and still be nightmarishly sued by another member of her family, who didn’t believe that her life had truly been endangered. Then, on the flip side of the coin, if you don’t intervene, because you feel like you can’t, because you’re worried about legal action, you end up in a medical malpractice situation.” - Dr. Danielle Jones / Hollywood Life

Beat Abbott PAC

"Hoping to harness the opposition to Gov. Greg Abbott's handling of the coronavirus, several Texas Democratic strategists are launching a new political group to defeat him in 2022. The Beat Abbott PAC, will raise money that will ultimately go to the Democratic nominee against Abbott in 2022, when he is up for a third term. Along the way, the political action committee aims to build a small-dollar donor list that can help Democrats in the next election cycle and "hold Abbott accountable for his failure on COVID." - The Texas Tribune

Dr. Jones wants American women – especially those in Texas to know that they could face life threatening conditions when they get pregnant, and that their doctors may now not be able to give them the best possible and life-saving medical care that they desperately need.
