NAACP Atlanta organizes to oppose Georgia Republican hostile State takeover of County Election boards

NAACP Atlanta mobilizes Georgians to contact their Republican senators to demand they stop their hostile take over of Fulton county elections.

Georgia Republican lawmakers are mounting a hostile takeover of Fulton county elections with Senate Bill 202. The bill lets the Republican dominated State Election Board replace a county’s election board and decide the outcome of an election.

NAACP Atlanta is encouraging Georgia voters to contact the Republicans behind this takeover bid with a digital campaign using Movement.Digital. The campaign explains how the takeover will deny them their voting rights, the Republicans behind the takeover and offers a sample message that voters can personalize and easily email their elected official.

Mobilizing to stop voter suppression

The mobilization campaign:
1. Identified the politicians behind the hostile takeover with data from the Legislative Navigator and Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC)
2. Found their contact details from the Georgia General Assembly website
3. Prepared a sample email that voters could send to their State Senator with Movement.Digital
4. Created a StoryMap to explain the takeover and how to contact their elected official

Dark money behind voter suppression

Koch Brother's funded A.L.E.C. drafts bills without regular democratic review and gets them passed into law by Republican legislatures. ALEC was behind the 'Stand Your Ground' bill that was behind Trayvon Martin's death. Now their voter suppression bills are being adopted by Republicans across the country threaten to kill democracy. SB 202 was drafted by Koch Brothers funded Heritage Foundation. The Georgia law had “eight key provisions that Heritage recommended,” said Heritage executive director Jessica Anderson.

"In a private meeting last month with big-money donors, she boasted that her outfit had crafted the new voter suppression law in Georgia and was doing the same with similar bills for Republican state legislators across the country. “In some cases, we actually draft them for them,” she said, “or we have a sentinel on our behalf give them the model legislation so it has that grassroots, from-the-bottom-up type of vibe.” - Mother Jones

For The People Act (H.R. 1)

Federal legislation is needed to prevent Republican State Legislatures from passing voter suppression bills and manipulating non-partisan election county election boards.

"For The People Act (H.R. 1) puts the needs of people ahead of special interests. It includes independent redistricting commissions, citizen-funded elections, closing the revolving door between government and corporate interests, and protecting voters against discrimination." - Common Cause

"The For the People Act would transform our democracy by making it fairer, stronger, and more inclusive." - The Brennan Center

TakeAway: Use StoryMaps to explain how special interests deny people their right to vote and use Movement.Digital to organize resistance to their takeover bid.
