George Floyd Bill, Anti-Vaxxers, Stacey Abrams fights voter suppression

For The People Act protects voting rights needed for common sense gun safety measures and police reform.

These editorial cartoons highlight the importance of passing the George Floyd Act for police reform and the For The People Act which protects voting rights. The cartoons show how Republicans use voter suppression to prevent common sense gun safety measures from passing.

"Fifteen years ago, much of corporate America stood up to support the renewal of the Voting Rights Act. But today, as Republicans increasingly politicize the entire process of voting and paint those who believe in its protection as partisans, corporations have become more timid.

Our democracy cannot withstand this timidity—from politicians, voters, or corporations. Voting rights are under attack, and if those with power, means and a platform refuse to act, we will lose our American democracy as we know it. Corporations can defend voting rights if pressured." - Marc Elias, Democracy Docket

Common sense gun safety measures

The House approved a pair of bills aimed at expanding and strengthening background checks for gun buyers. Democrats pushed past Republican opposition to advance major gun safety measures after decades of congressional inaction. The legislation that would require background checks for all gun buyers, and extend the time the F.B.I. has to vet those flagged by the national instant check system.

Despite being widely popular with voters, the measures face what is expected to be insurmountable opposition in the Senate, where Republicans have resisted imposing any limits on guns, including stricter background check requirements. - NYT

For The People Act

The House passed the For the People Act, which would provide sweeping reforms to protect voters' rights, increase election security, mandate independent redistricting and more. The For the People Act, also known as H.R. 1, was first introduced and passed in 2019 during the last Congress and reintroduced by Rep. John Sabranes, D-Md. The bill seeks to increase voter turnout by expanding early voting, lessening identification requirements, allowing same-day registration and requiring states to set up automatic registration for federal elections for eligible voters.

Sabranes said the "2020 election underscored the need for comprehensive, structural democracy reform. Americans across the country were forced to overcome rampant voter suppression, gerrymandering and a torrent of special-interest dark money just to exercise their vote and their voice in our democracy." - USA Today
