More than a tenth of the state’s civilian labor force, or 90,000 people, filed for unemployment benefits last month as the coronavirus dealt a crushing blow to an already ailing West Virginia economy.
WV remains one of the poorest states in the country, where one in five children struggle to access food.
Two in 10 West Virginians are 65 or older, and nearly half of adults have a higher risk of developing a serious case of Covid-19.
Political oath needed
Physician's take the Hippocratic Oath to use their powers to do good. It includes this promise:
"Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks.
But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty.
Above all, I must not play at God."
Perhaps politicians should also take an oath to not harm people who trust them?
