Conduct Polls In A Pandemic? Use Chatbots.

DemLabs blog

April 27, 2020

Collecting accurate, timely information in a pandemic needs innovation.

Mothers Of Hope uses chatbots to collect information from Kalamazoo residents about their Coronavirus care and census participation. The group encourages community members to call or text a phone number or respond by Facebook Messenger.  The chatbots ask questions prepared by Mothers of Hope, transcribe phone calls and save the responses in a Google Sheet.

Mothers of Hope has collected 500 responses in a week for a cost of $2.45 per response. The responses create an opt-in contact lists. Project details here.

Mothers of Hope is a non-profit group based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It empowers and strengthens women, families, and communities to rise above the effects of substance use disorders, poverty, violence and systemic inequities. It exemplifies culturally sensitive programs that are successful in restoring individuals, families, and communities impacted by substance use disorders, poverty, violence and systemic inequities.

Stephanie Moore, County Commissioner for Kalamazoo County Government managed this project to better serve her community during this pandemic with a little help from DemLabs.
